BECOME SAFE
Summary

The overall objective of "BECOME SAFE - Building Efforts for Children On the Move in Europe through Systemic Approaches, Facilitation and Expertise", co-funded by the European Union, is to improve the protection of migrant children and young people victims or at risk of violence, and uphold their rights to assistance and quality victims care in the EU.

In Italy the project aims to contribute to improving the protection of unaccompanied children within the reception system by acting on the contexts to (i) reduce the level of vulnerability and promote self-protection mechanisms (ii) prevent the risks of violation of rights and violence that these persons face in view of their particular situation of vulnerability, and (iii) respond to phenomena of violence that involve or might involve unaccompanied children through the promotion of a preventive child-rights and sensitive approach and the direct participation of unaccompanied children and youth, reception system professionals and local and national stakeholders.

Duration of the Project

February 2021 - January 2023

Objective

The overall objective is to improve the protection of migrant children and young people victims or at risk of violence, and uphold their rights to assistance and quality victims care in the EU.

Specific objectives include:

  • Empower and raise awareness amongst migrant children and youth victims or potential victims of violence on their rights to protection, and available support services;
  • Enhance the capacity of professionals working with migrant children and youth victims or potential victims of violence, and other ‘mainstream professionals’ and child protection systems delivering victims support services in order to better serve the specific needs of migrant children;
  • Enable migrant children and youth victims and potential victims of violence to access quality protection and multidisciplinary support services through improved referrals and coordination between professionals and child protection services.

Resources

Activities

The project deploys three complementary strategies to promote systemic and sustainable improvements in the protection of children and youth on the move in Belgium, Italy, Spain and Greece. It does so through working hand in hand with children and young people themselves, as well as professionals in contact with them.

Amongst the latter, the project specifically targets: professionals in contact with children and young people on the move in reception centres and other accommodation services (such as social workers, NGO staff, etc.); professionals in contact with children and young people victims of violence or at risk as part of national child protection services / victims support services.

  • The facilitators will be trained on the basis of a European training curriculum translated and adapted to the languages and contexts of the partner countries;

  • Training sessions will also be organised for 10 young facilitators in each country, in addition to focus groups with unaccompanied minors and young migrants in order to gather their views on protection and safety and their practical knowledge of support organisations.
